Scent Memories

Today I unpacked a box of my mother’s things. In it was a clean dish towel acting as a buffer between two dishes. On a whim I raised the towel to my rose, inhaled and began to weep.

Fourteen months and change she’s been gone now, even longer since she’d had her own place. Yet this towel, packed snugly away for years still held the scent of the place it came from. It smelled the way I remember her last apartment did; a combination of her perfume, fabric softener and the faint scent of cooking. It smelled of home, of love, of a dozen memories so fleeting they were but whispers through my mind.

My heart was heavy with longing to feel like someone’s child again. In this world, I will never again feel her embrace, never hear her voice. It’s unfathomable, but at the same time my reality. For a time, I still have the scent memory of her. I allowed myself only brief moments of indulgence, then got a Ziploc freezer bag and sealed the towel in it, hoping to preserve for a time, my mother in a scent.

Have you ever had a sharp reminder of the past from a whiff of something unexpected? Did it turn you to mush or buoy your spirits?

New Author Blog Hop Winners

A great big thanks to Saba over at Of Thoughts and Words  and  Michelle over at http://flickspicks1.blogspot.com/ for organizing and co-hosting The New Author Blog Hop!  I tried to hop around the entire list, but am not sure I really did. I had to do it in segments and kinda forgot where I left off at times.

Sorry for the delay in announcing  winners, but I’ve been buried in a kitchen remodel. I finally got a chance to do the drawing, so without further ado the lucky commenters are…

Winner of a copy of Insight: K M Walton!

Winner of the heart necklaces is…Michele (w/one  ‘l’)!

Congratulations to you both. I’ll be in touch via e-mail. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and commented! I really appreciate it.

Blogging, blogging, blogging

I hear the old Rawhide TV show theme song in that title. (Keep that auth-or blog-ging)Some of you won’t be old enough to know what I’m talking about. Ignore it. The word is repeated three times because I’m blogging here to tell you where I’m blogging elsewhere so that’s one.

Blogging 2: Starting now, I’ll be on Under the Tiki Hut for the next few days, or rather Paul Craddock from Bittersweet Obsessions is there. It seems he’s having a bit of trouble figuring out what present to get Teriza for Christmas. Why not pop over there and help him with a suggestion or two? You might win a copy of BOs. 😀 I think it goes live a little before 8 a.m.

Blogging 3: I’m also at TRSBlue today. That’s The Romance Studio’s blog for erotic romance. I talk a bit about advent calendars, a bit about the Crainesian world and prezzies.

Hmm. I see a theme here. Presents. Holidays. I’m kinda in the mood to decorate for Christmas and the boxes are sitting in my garage, their contents ready to make my home festive. But I’m not dragging them out until after the weekend. You see, I’m doing a kitchen remodel. Hubby and I did a few things, but this week is the bigger stuff.

Wednesday is electrician day – disconnecting the hardwired electric cooktop.

Thurs is countertop removal and installation of new. Yay! I can’t wait to be rid of the old dark laminate and get the creamy ones and have the new faucet too.

Friday (God willing.) will be install of propane lines and connection of my new larger gas cooktop with major BTU producing burners. I’m SO excited for that as I do a lot of cooking.

After that will come tiled backsplash and a little paint. I could’ve painted first, but wanted to see how colorful I can go after the countertops are in. Those will be a game changer in the room. So excited, though I’m also kinda dreading having my kitchen torn up and everything out of the bottom cabinets for a couple days. Did I mention I have a big kitchen? Lots of work ahead and everything needs to be done well in advance of Christmas guests arriving.

Before I forget, today is the last day of the New Author Blog Hop. Check out the post after this one for details and a chance to win my short story, Insight, or a set of necklaces and heart pendants. Shiny things!

How’s your December shaping up?
