>Lot’s of nuthin’

>That’s what I have in the way of a blog post – lot’s of nuthin’ important, but a little update.

This week I’m feeling accomplished because I:
__Finished a project, wrote the Q & S and submitted it.
__Set up schedule for short story writing and recorded submission deadlines on my calendar.
__Got the Christmas boxes back into the attic
__Looked ahead 4 months and planned which contests I’d like to enter.
__Cleaned house (Yuck!)
__Had overnight company
__Sent a first chapter and synopsis off for critique
__Paid some bills
__Blogged 4 times
__Did 8-10 loads of laundry
__Total of 15 new pages this week and still writing this evening. 🙂
__I even found a new ticker thingie to add to my blog. (Thanks Mary!)These things make me happy.

and that’s why I feel accomplished!

Sanguine. Wat’s it Mean?

Since writers are in the wordsmith business, I thought I’d start including a few new (to me) words and their definitions occasionally. Today’s “Wat’s it Mean?” word is SANGUINE. I thought I knew what it meant. In my head, it sounds like a good word to describe a lazy river or a couch potato. Not so.

1. cheerfully optimistic, hopeful, or confident: a sanguine disposition; sanguine expectations.

2. reddish; ruddy: a sanguine complexion

So let’s use sanguine in a sentence:

1. Her sanguine expression was deceptive, for behind that smile lurked a monster.

2. His sanguine nose and cheeks suggested long-term alcohol abuse.

At one time I dabbled (read: tried painting and sculpture as a creative outlet) in art. In one of the definitions, I discovered sanguine was once used to describe a particular type of painting done in a reddish-brown chalk. See DaVinci’s self portrait in sanguine? From the looks of it, very similar to today’s sepia tone, though perhaps a bit more red.

So tell me, did you learn something today?

>A Friday Freebie

>Writers can be real worry-warts. We obsess about our characters, their conflicts, their backgrounds, whether or not we have enough conflict. So for all of you out there with conflict issues, check out this CONFLICT TEST.

Okay, so I posted it late on Thursday. Most people will read it on Friday or later – so there. 🙂
