>Looking back at 2006

>2006 was a good year for me. I was pleasantly surprised when I revisited my list of goals to see how many I’d actually achieved. I’ve posted the list below so you can see how I did. One thing stuck out for me when looking over the list: I need to put more emphasis on writing and less on other writing-related endeavors. Getting my name out there is important, promoting myself, if you will – getting known in the writing community. But unless I have the manuscripts to sell and keep turning them out, all the promotions in the world won’t help me build a career. So, I’m trying to skew my 2007 goals in that direction.

Thanks to a new Excel spreadsheet – a gift from Donna Caubarreaux of the ContestAlert Yahoo group (ContestAlert-subscribe@yahoogroups.com) – I have a much better way of tracking my progress and keeping on track this year. Thanks, Donna!

_X_Sell a book
_?_Sell another novella (Sold short stories instead – does that count?)
_X_Final in more than 1 contest (Just finaled in Maggie – didn’t enter any others until late 2006)
_X_Win another contest

2006 SUMMARY:

Pitched ASW to Susan Litman at Nat’l
Entered 2 mss in 5 contests.

Submitted 1 requested partial due to contest placement
Submitted 1 requested full due to editor appt. (Nat’l)
Submitted 3 short stories to 2 TRUE mags; 2 SOLD
Submitted 7 features to 2 TRUE mags; 3 SOLD

All in all, not too shabby an outcome, but I do hope to have more manuscripts to show for 2007.

Do you set goals for yourself? If so, do you revisit them during the year to keep yourself on track or do you set them and forget them? I’d be interested to know what others do.

>Need an expert’s advice?

>As you can see, blogging hasn’t been high on my list of priorities lately. I didn’t forget about posting my 2006 goal results and I’ve been working on a new list for 2007. I’ll post both soon.

But tonight I wanted to tell you about a new (to me) website I came across today. I needed to know just a little bit about hot mopping for my new WIP. Hot mopping is a roofing application where hot stinky, gooey tar is literally mopped across the surface of a building to seal it. Other than that, I know nothing about how one would estimate the cost of hot mopping or what one would look for to give an estimate. So, I’ve posted the question on allexperts.com. First you choose your subject matter, which brings up an expert’s resume and pertinent info. You e-mail this person the question and wait for an answer. After I posted my question, I received a confirmation e-mail almost immediately. It informed me that I should get an answer to my question within 3 days or I can click on a link they give to inquire why. Then they have this at the bottom of the e-mail:

Thanks for using our service; if we can ever be of further help, we have thousands of volunteers who can answer questions about Arts, Entertainment, Travel, Auto Repair, Business,Investing, Law, Medicine, Computers, Software, Careers, Education, and more, all at http://www.allexperts.com

Pretty cool, yeah? If it works, that is. I’ll keep you posted as to how effective it is, but it could be a nice source for off-the-wall writing research questions.

1-5-07 Update: Well, I still think it’s a cool site, but my expert didn’t know about that particular kind of roofing, or at least not about the estimating a job part. Response time was 1 day. Not bad. 🙂

I’m Back!

Okay, Okay, I know. I abandoned you. I abandoned my blog. I’ll do better. Promise. But the writing comes first.

If you’ve checked the meter, you’ll see A Suitable Wife has been pushed from the nest. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s now sitting in N.Y. on an editor’s desk. I’ve also entered it in the Golden Heart and am contemplating two other contests. Sam and Rosie finally saw their way clear to a happy ending and I feel it’s the best work I’ve done yet.

A second meter has joined the first on the sidebar. Uh-huh. That’s right. Carol has been a busy woman.
KiTA stands for Knight in Tarnished Armor and features Rosie’s brother, Travis and her best friend, Claire. More on that later–maybe tomorrow.

Until then…
