Arkansas and Canada bound

Today was another milestone in my career. I mailed off my first requested partial–to Wanda Ottewell in Canada. Yippee!!! Load off! The picture I’ve included is a scene close to Makapuu lighthouse that my heroine, Leilani, snaps a photo of. Pretty odd, huh? All that cactus and the Pacific as a backdrop. But hey, don’t expect my page count to rise drastically in the next week even though the partial is gone, because…

DH and I are at it again. No, not fighting. We really don’t do that. We’re headed back to Arkansas to finish renovations on his old home place. I will be a painting blur once again. This time we don’t have the use of the camper trailer to live in, so packing is a nightmare that includes a blow-up bed, linens, food and enough picnic type foods and utensils to survive.

Augh! Just remembered I need dog food, too. Beau loves to travel and has been known to scarf down a few of those awful Crystal burgers as an on-the-road meal. I always suspected they were dog food disguised.

I did inform DH that I needed two UNINTERRUPTED hours a day to keep my head in my WIP and make some headway. He just kinda looked confused, poor baby.

Until I return… happy reading and writing!

P.S. Happy Birthday to the MIL! We’ll see you in a few.

Panstering and praise

Jenny Crusie has been blogging her way though a novella, and I have SO identifed with her journey. This quote seemed appropriate. Apparently, she’s more of a panster than a plotter–like me.

“Writing a book is like driving a car at night. You only see as far as your headlights go, but you can make the whole trip that way.” E. L. Doctorow

I’m the kind of writer who can write an outline, but only the highpoints and a lot about the character’s backgrounds are in there. I can see a few turning points, but the intricacies of the journey are still a mystery. The characters reveal their angst as I go along, and they usually have a lot of angst. Fits the Desire line well, I think.

But enough about that. On to the praise, more publically given (Or the more coherent Maggie acceptance speech I wish I’d given)…

I wish to thank my family and friends:

Last night I was talking to the DS and gave him a rough synopsis of Return To Paradise. Okay, maybe he was humoring the old lady, but he showed enthusiasm for the plot. You may remember from previous posts – he’s an actor. He GETS things like Vogler’s hero’s journey and the 3-act structure, GMC, etc. He’s becoming a reader, bless his heart. There’s hope for him yet. But I digress… He’s been super supportive in this writer’s journey as has been my DS & DH. The DS directs her friends to my website to read excerpts. The DH tells the neighbors of each milestone of my journey before I can. 🙂

My mama and sister eagerly await my first book on the shelves (hey, me too!) as if it’s a given. My best-ever friend, Sharon does the same. When I told her of my Maggie win, her comment (after the excitement died down) was something along the lines of the judges finally getting what she’d known all along. Bless her. (Sidebar note: I don’t think my bros know much about the whole writing thing.)

my CP’s:

There’s a slew of CP’s from the RWClist and ContempoCats that have helped my writing grow, and I thank them all. But a few stand out for their long-term suffering through some of my drafts and agonizing: Linda, the Rebels past and present (Mel, Randy, Terry, Vonda, Pam, Tammy, & Betty), Darcy (Hey–aren’t you supposed to be writing?). There are others in the writing community too numerous to mention, but a few have stood out in the crowd with their steadfast encouragement: Morag, Clara, Charlotte, Kelsy, Nancy, Elisabeth. I’m sure there’s others I can’t think of right now. To all of you I say a heartfelt thanks.

my chapter mates:

Another thanks to the very supportive members of Aloha RWA and GRW.

and the Maggie contest:

My gratitude to all involved in the Maggie contest from start to finish.

Ah, much better than that thick-with-tears and much shortened version I actually gave. 🙂 Now I feel better.

Length: Novella

Eight years ago, Crainesian teenager Zeenie LaShey was drugged and violated by a man wearing a hideous Halloween mask. She’s worked hard to rebuild her life and is ready to re-enter the world of dating. But Turk Fontaine, with his good looks, charm and endless one-night stands, isn’t anywhere close to the gentle, kind man she’s looking for in a life mate–even if his very presence does make her so hot and bothered she can’t concentrate..

For five long years, Turk has remained on the periphery of Zeenie’s life, distant and aloof, waiting for her to claim him as her life mate. Now it seems the playboy lifestyle he cultivated to keep his dates casual is backfiring. Believing him incapable of commitment and fidelity, Zeenie can’t envision them performing the tender, sensual joining ritual that would entwine their hearts and minds for a lifetime of love.

To Zeenie’s surprise, there’s more than meets the eye with the patient and determined Turk. She finds herself deeply attracted on many levels to the man who’s teaching her to embrace her sensual side. But the custom of their people is for the woman to claim the male. Her inability to do so years earlier caused Turk a great deal of embarrassment. In order to make amends, Zeenie must reach deep inside herself and let love provide the courage she needs to become the aggressor and, in a grand and public display, claim Turk as her life mate.
