>I was just bloghopping and ran across Romance Unleashed – a neat idea several authors had to try a cross-marketing experiment. At the top of the page was this quote:
“If you obey the rules, you miss all the fun.” –Katherine Hepburn
Hallelejah! The woman had that right. Writers, how many times have you written pages of text, deep into the zone, typing madly and found yourself still following all the supposed ‘rules’ of writing out there? Don’t use “that”, “only”, & “just”. No adverbs, no telling-ever, don’t change POV in a scene or your hair will all fall out… (pant, pant–okay so I made up the last part about the hair) Not to mention the various passive voice words that need never spew from your fingers. Lordy, there’s a lot of them. I could go on ad nauseum, but why? You know them. Some have logical reasoning behind them and some are just ridiculous.
I’ve decided I just need a new rule to negate all others: In all things, moderation. And every once in awhile (Yes, I know I just made that 1 word – sue me!) do something radical!
So there! Bwa-ha-ha-ha!
>No rules, no rules, no rules!! I’m with ya on that one! Many a good work has been ruined by the rule-police.You’ve got to trust yourself first, and then throw a good couple of critique partners into the mix and you’ve got all you need. Well, I guess you’d need a publisher too…
