Blogging about Blogging

Thanks to fellow GRW chapter member, Darcy, for directing me to this article on blogging. She knew I’d been working on my own article for the GRW Galley regarding blogs. Actually, I’d already finished it and had it accepted, but this info was good and I wanted to pass it along. This article (from WritersDigest.com) views blogging in an entirely new light. Most of the aspiring author blogs I know of are on the lighthearted side and contain jokes and surveys and pictures of hot guys. They’re a place to blow off steam, grouse a little, talk about the home life and writing. According to this article, blogging is serious business for a writer and should be looked at as a representation of their writing abilities.

Yikes!

How many of us actually think our blog might influence an agent to represent us, or an editor to accept our book? How many look to our blog to represent us enough to get paying gigs from it? Not many, I’ll wager. And while I don’t think those things happen every day, it’s definitely something to think about. I even blogged on this subject (Writer Blogs & Professionalism) some time ago after hearing Stephanie Bond speak on how website and your online presence represent you and your career.

Since I decided to write an article on blogs, I’ve been seeing them mentioned everywhere. Even the latest RWA eNotes referenced a blog. Imagine that. This new Internet journaling thing is all the rage – and apparently, serious stuff.

Foreplay revisited

Well, I don’t feel so bad now. Steph’s comment below about using the plotting board after she’s written the book makes so much sense to me. LOL! Okay, so some of you may think that’s a little back asswards. That’s fine. Stay in your little neat, orderly world. Mine just won’t fit there. I am, however, going to try to stretch how far ahead I can plot with each and every project. Guess that’s more along the lines of the way Alison uses it?

My reasoning is that someday I’ll be book published and will have to write a proposal. That includes 3 chapters and a synopsis, I believe. Imagine that! Knowing enough about your book that you can write even a loose synopsis before you finish it.

The idea boggles my mind. Is that where you totally BS until you think it sounds good, then go write a book only vaguely similar?

Can you hear Linda laughing at me, secure in the mental video of her book? I can. (Hey, she’s the one keeps telling me she’s LOUD!)

Where’s that darn PAUSE button?

Click.
